The Gem of Kailua
Now a cozy neighborhood located in Kailua on the east side of Oahu, Lanikai was originally called Ka’ohao. Between Kailua town and Waimanalo, Lanikai is a one-way loop with the only entrance and exit heading towards Kailua. The first permanent homes were built in 1924 and used as weekend or vacation getaways. Charles Frasier, Irwin Beadle and Charles Heiser began to develop the neighborhood in the 1920’s, planning the streets, as well as paving and naming them. They also planned the Mid-Pacific Country Club, located in the neighborhood. The neighborhood association purchased land and build a park in the center of the neighborhood and spearheaded the state’s first dedicated bike-way, a still frequently used part of the Lanikai loop.
With one of the world’s most beautiful beaches just steps from any home, houses in Lanikai are highly sought after. Many beachfront estates are used as luxurious vacation rentals, while many locals choose to call Lanikai home. Lanikai, meaning “heavenly sea” in Hawaiian, lives up to its name. Located just off the beach are the two picturesque Mokulua islands. Just a kayak away, these islands add adventure to the otherwise calm and glassy turquoise seas. Within the neighborhood is also the start to the famous Lanikai Pillboxes hike. Go to the beach, golf, and hike, all without leaving the neighborhood!
Homes in Lanikai are highly sought after, with luxury beachfront homes fetching the highest sums. Backing up to a mountain, Lanikai offers a variety of property types, from those stunning beachfront villas, to the quieter hillside homes, many with ocean views. Somewhat secluded from the rest of Kailua, Lanikai is a 10 minute drive to the Kailua town center, 20 minutes to Waimanalo or Kaneohe, 30 minutes to Honolulu, 30 minutes to the airport, and a beautiful drive up the coast to the scenic North Shore.
