Brilliant Turquoise Waters, Famous Snorkeling, and Exceptional Hiking
Hawaii Kai is located just 12 miles east of Honolulu, Oahu. The area is known for its residential communities, marina, and spectacular snorkeling. Traveling out of Honolulu, the turquoise waters of the marina set against a backdrop of soaring ridgelines behind Hawaii Kai is spectacular.
Hawaii Kai was developed in the 1960s after Henry J. Kaiser entered into a lease agreement with the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Estate. The agreement was to turn the 521 acres around what was once an ancient fishpond, into a marina community. The fishpond was dredged and the shape of Hawaii Kai with its flowing marina channels were created. Today, residential communities surround the waterways into the valleys and up into the ridgelines.
Hanauma Bay is one of the most remarkable snorkeling destinations in the world and voted #1 Beach in America in 2016 by beach expert “Dr. Beach.” The nature preserve, Hanauma Bay, is a protected inlet teeming with colorful fish and fascinating coral. Avid hikers love the challenging Koko Crater trail. The steep 1.8-mile trail is actually a staircase of railroad ties leading to the top of a peak featuring breathtaking views of Oahu.
The exclusive Hawaii Kai neighborhood of Kamehame Ridge is home to multi-million dollar estates looking out over Honolulu and west Oahu coastline. Just over the Kamehame Ridge is the Kalama Valley neighborhood which offers single family homes across from famous Sandy Beach.
Back at the center of Hawaii Kai is the Mariner’s Bay Cove Club, Costco, shopping center, and gated townhouse and condo communities. Many of the locations on the water offer boat docking just steps from the door. Hawaii Kai is a popular location for residents due to the close proximity to Honolulu and visitors enjoy easy access to all the wonderful outdoor activities.
